SATURDAY SERIES #2

Summers had a logic all their own and they always brought something out in me. Summer was supposed to be about freedom and youth and no school and possibilities and adventure and exploration. Summer was a book of hope. That’s why I loved and hated summers. Because they made me want to believe.— Benjamin Alire Sáenz

I am my best self in summer. I live my middle age dream with sweet summer activities and the deliciousness of my littles who are not so little anymore. My joy is found at the local town pool, which to a pessimist’s eye is chaos. But if you look beyond the surface you’ll find aquatic utopia.

In summer, to live like every day like Saturday requires close proximity to a child who can share their innocence, simple pleasures, and exhilarating exhaustion. Because to be a kid in summer is to taste life’s nectar.

My children swim freely for hours on end. They seem to never tire in the water, and I secretly hope this wonder of wading in the pool never leaves them. Whether it’s a small splash or diving deep, there’s magic in the pool.

So the trick to Saturday feels isn’t any day, or a place, but the possibility of adventure. And let me just say, we could all stand to get in the water more.
