The Vows Came to Life After the Wedding

15 years of marriage. Fifteen years since we stood in front of the people we loved and promised to love each other for a lifetime.

Happy anniversary to my beloved.

It’s strange to think about how, leading up to our wedding, I thought it was the most important day of my life.

And in many ways, it was.

It was the day we stood in front of the people we loved and made a promise. Not because we knew exactly what the next 15 years would hold, but because we knew we wanted to find out together.

We promised to love each other for a lifetime.

At the time, I thought the important part was saying the words.

I know better now.

The important part was everything that came after.

What 15 Years of Marriage Has Taught Me

The vows came to life in the ordinary mornings.

In the nights when one of us was exhausted and the other kept going.

In the decisions we didn’t always agree on.

In the seasons when life felt easy and the seasons when it didn’t.

They came to life in hospital rooms and family vacations, birthday candles and bad moods, packed lunches and late nights, grocery store runs and kitchen renovations.

They came to life in two little girls who somehow turned the two of us into a family of four.

They came to life in the million tiny choices nobody photographs.

Choosing patience.

Choosing forgiveness.

Choosing to laugh.

Choosing to stay close.

Choosing each other, again and again, even when the day wasn’t particularly romantic.

Because that’s the thing nobody tells you about marriage:

The wedding is one day.

The marriage is every day.

And after 15 years of marriage, I think that’s what I understand most clearly.

A lasting marriage isn’t built only during the big moments.

It’s built in the quiet ones.

It’s built in the conversations, the compromises, the celebrations, the disappointments, the inside jokes, the difficult seasons and the moments when you look across the room and realize that somehow, after all these years, this is still your person.

So today, I don’t just celebrate the day we got married.

I celebrate everything that came after it.

The life we built when no one was watching.

The hard seasons we didn’t know were coming.

The laughter that caught us by surprise.

The decisions we made together, and the ones we had to make alone.

The people we became along the way.

I celebrate the family we built.

The two little girls who made our love bigger than just the two of us.

The home we’ve made.

The memories we couldn’t have imagined when we stood at the altar 15 years ago.

The Wedding Was the Beginning, Not the Finish Line

Fifteen years ago, we said, “I do.”

We had no idea what we were really saying yes to.

We were saying yes to a life we couldn’t possibly have predicted.

And maybe that’s the real beauty of marriage.

You don’t make one promise on your wedding day.

You spend your life learning how to keep it.

That’s what I think about when I look back at our wedding now.

I don’t just remember the dress, the photographs, the celebration or the words we said.

I think about everything those words became.

Fifteen years later, our vows aren’t sitting in a wedding album.

They’re living in our house.

They’re sitting around our dinner table.

They’re in the family we created.

They’re in the life we built.

They’re in us.

Happy 15th anniversary, my beloved.

I’d marry you again.

But mostly, I’m grateful I get to keep choosing you.

For all the days still to come.
